Greetings,
The purpose of this blog is to
discuss, collaborate, and share information about the state of education and
educational ideas.
My background
I have been teaching at a high
school in southwest Houston for seven years. It is the same school, in which I
graduated. I am also a coach there as well. I have coached football,
basketball, track, and soccer. I have taught World Geography and United States
History. I have taught special education inclusion classes as well as the
gifted and talented population. The district I teach in is one of the most
diverse in the nation. The school I teach at is one of the most diverse in the
district. This diversity has shaped me to be able to teach a wide variety of
students successfully.
“WHY”
The reason I became a teacher is because of my teachers. The good,
bad, and ugly... All my teachers have shaped me into the person I am today and
I hope to be that for a student. I grew up with a single mom, so I looked up to
teachers and coaches for guidance. Their lessons affected me beyond the
classroom and still impact my life. One of my favorite teachers that had the
greatest impacts on my life was a coach. He taught sophomore English. I never
had him as a teacher. He would give me rides during the summer to Strength and
Conditioning Camp. In addition, he would help me with my writing. This guidance
helped me get into college. When I
graduated college, he helped me network and land several job offers.
Aspiration
I recently graduated from Lamar University with
a masters in Educational Leadership. The reason I pursued this goal is that I
want to be a part of the transformation in education. We are at a crossroads in
education due to the adaptation of personal technology and new advancements in pedagogy.
The paradigm is shifting. What once was an institution designed to help
students secure employment in traditional factory and service jobs, but now we
are training for jobs that have not been created yet. With that being said, we
must not over-adjust as well. There is a fear that if we ditch some of the
traditional features of education there will be unforeseen consequences. My
hope is to be a since of balance between the two camps. I want to be a part of
a school, team, and eventually lead a school that will pioneer new strategies
and ideas in education. I want to create an environment and place where
teachers are supported and nurtured. The same philosophy I have with students,
I want to apply it to my teachers and staff.
